ARTIFACT TABLE

H 25.5″ x W 26″ x D 18″

ASH / LIMED WAX / 1/2” GLASS-BEVELED

A design wholly inspired by Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto. His experimentation with laminating and bending wood c.1932 followed his use of bent plywood in furniture design on very much of a commercial scale. I first saw an amazing body of work organized by the Finnish Society of Craft and Design and exhibited at the Craft and Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles in the early 1980’s. In my piece the legs are two laminated and bent side units locked by a ”keystone“. Another simple bent brace joins them at the top and simple struts at the floor level. The result is a light skeletal feel that accentuates the tables negative space. The glass top allow you to see the form in its entirety.

“The best standardization committee in the world is nature herself, but in nature standardization occurs mainly in connection to the smallest possible units, cells.  The result is millions of flexible combinations in which one never encounters the stereotyped”.  Alvar Aalto, cited by Andrei Gozak
