WHITE OAK / POWDER COATED METAL FRAME
These chairs were purely an organic process. At the start of replacing the seat and back on very defunk’d 1950’s chair frames, I rescued a 1/2 wine barrel from a beloved local winery intended for a planter. I was astounded by the beauty of the French Oak and in an instant decided to morph the barrel staves into the chair project. It landed completely into my Yard Sale Series.
The gentle curve of the seating follows that of the original barrel. The random selection of grain pattern and trapezoidal shapes were also defined by the existing material. I was able to process a straight board to a decent thickness, proportioning a minimal back. It has been a joy to produce a piece so guided by chance.
The Yard Sale Series is an ongoing project in which the force of attraction to some aspect of found furniture in disrepair becomes the creative spark for a new design.
