SOLID BEECH FRAME/ BEECH VENEER BENT LAMINATION SEAT

I proclaimed my love for chair making when in a Chair Design woodworking course with Larry Buechley, teaching at the Santa Fe Community College (sfcc). The intense process refined and advanced my skills while being in a well-equipped shop and supportive environment. Moon Chair evolved like sculpture, photo-typing and refining each component as they joined the whole. Inspiration evolved through contrasting elements, curves and angles, while the cool color and grain pattern of the wood species-Beech remained subtle.

Fabricating the gentle curve of the bentwood seat was the first move and remained the floating center which all others parts revolve around. Each move was a challenge as Larry demanded traditional techniques for mortise and tenon joinery. Still, it was a difficult and tedious process that lasted beyond the course yet after such a process I am happy with the outcome. My background in architecture, my fine art education and a discovered love for woodworking truly blended to design and build the Moon Chair.
